Puppy basics

A puppy needs a good learning foundation in order to be a confident adult. But learning is more than just teaching your puppy the basics like sit and stay.
The most important aspect of the learning process is to introduce your puppy to the environments and situations she is likely to experience throughout her life. Introducing her to people, dogs and other animals will encourage her to be socially confident as she grows.
Just like little children, the brain of a puppy is like a sponge and every experience is stored away in her memory, building her personality. While a puppy might be born with a certain temperament, it is the way she is raised that will truly determine her personality. The more positive and enriching experiences she has, the more confident she will be as an adult.
Puppies learn all the time, not just when they are being trained, so your behaviour and the way you handle your puppy will influence her growth. I always suggest treats; pats and love for behaviours you like and when she does something wrong – the less you fuss the better.
Puppies need to be gently guided into making good decisions, allowed to investigate their environments. A puppy that experiences fear or rough handling as she grows is more likely to show aggressive behaviour as an adult.
3 Simple Tips on How to Train Your New Pup:
Training your pup is vital from the very first step they take into their new humble abode! It is important that your pup learns these 3 life lessons from a young age so that they can carry it with them throughout life.
1. House Training:
Ensure that an area is set up in your house and outside in your garden that is made for your little furry friend to learn to do her business. A delicious treat is a great reward if your puppy recognizes this as a potty area!
2. No Biting:
Discourage your pup from biting you before their little teeth turn into big dog teeth! Rough play can look like fun, but encouraging rough play in a pup can very easily equal an aggressive adult. This accounts for small and big breed dogs. A Chihuahua can do a lot of damage through biting – just have a look at her teeth!
3. Come Here:
At times your pooch may misbehave without even recognizing that he’s done wrong, like running into a busy road. To avoid a tragic accident, your furry friend needs to understand and learn that when you say “come here" he must stop what he’s doing and come to you.
Always remember that tasty doggy treats; pats and love can go a long way towards obedient behaviour!
